Hey Europeans! Better never call us the lazy Greeks again. By the OECD

oecd_data_greece

The unflatering sterotype of “the Lazy Greeks”, the reason why, as it was presented by international press, Greece came to the need of loans for which the “clean ” other Europeans  had to pay “by their pockets” is finally reversed by the latest  data published by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) regarding the average European citizens’ working hours .Contrary to what most Europeans were emphatically, by multiple internaltional and German media, persuaded, Greeks are actually the ones who work more hard throughout the European Union.

OECD data showed that employees in Greece put in an average weekly shift of 42 hours, even more than Germans who only manage 35.3 hours.

The average hours worked per person in Germany noted the insider, has continually fallen in the last twenty years. Since 1991, although an ever increasing percentage of the population is employed, there has also been an increase in volunteering and/or part time work as well: 22% of German labour are without full-time contracts or in temporary full-time positions. Germany is moving from problems of unemployment to underemployment, when workers do not get the hours they want or hold down jobs that are not in line with their education levels.

Some experts, though, claim this is due to the nature of the work in Greece, as in many sectors, such as agriculture and commerce, people put in long hours, while this does not necessarily have anything to do with their efficiency.
