You Could Meet A Goat hanging In The Air , In #Greece. Truly …

hqdefaultdownload11

Yes, you could have met this while walking in Greece, just in front of your eyes, or upon your head. A Goat Hanging in the Air, By Its Horns, From The Power Line

And actually, that was the surreal sight that greeted a group of guys near the village of Sykourio in central Greece last Wednesday.

The men activated an “emergency rescue operation”  and saved the goat which was dangling from its horns dozens of feet above a steep hill.

They pushed a ladder into a nearby tree. One of the men who climbed up, tied a rope to the goat’s leg and threw it over to his friend standing further up the hillside. The rescuer dragged the goat back to firmer ground.

After its horns were disentangled from the cable, the animal bounded off down the hill — as if nothing had happened.

The goat appeared to be unharmed, leaving everyone speechless about how did it make it to get trapped on the power line in the first place.

And it is not the first time .

Look at this unique photo taken in Central Greece, a couple decades ago.

One after the other NGOs pull out of #Lesvos hotspots  sending strong message to EU

A humanitarian crisis is unfolding at the Athens port of Piraeus, where thousands of asylum seekers and migrants are stranded,

the Human Rights Watch said  on Thursday 24 March.

“The suffering in Piraeus is a direct consequence of Europe’s failure to respond in a legal and compassionate way to the crisis on its shores,”

said Eva Cosse, Greece specialist at Human Rights Watch, in a statement.

In the port of Piraeus there are three large camps and one small one, writes the Muslim Times.  Food is provided alternately by the Red Cross, the navy, a supermarket chain, the community of Piraeus and the local football club, Olympiakos.

By the Human Rights Watch, around 5,000 men, women, and children are at the port.

There are reports of fights between Afghan and Syrian men and mounting fears of sexual harassment and violence against women and children.

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) earlier this week saying the so-called hotspots where arrivals are screened and registered on the Greek islands have turned into detention centres.

  • The UNHCR has since refused to transport people to the centres, noting Greece is not prepared to handle the case loads under the EU-Turkey deal.
  • Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the Norwegian Refugee Council and Save the Children have also pulled out.

“We took the extremely difficult decision to end our activities in Moria (on Lesbos) because continuing to work inside would make us complicit in a system we consider to be both unfair and inhumane,” said Marie Elisabeth Ingres, MSF’s head of mission in Greece.

  • Amnesty International accused Turkey of forcibly returning around 30 asylum seekers to Afghanistan “just hours after the European Union-Turkey refugee deal came into force”.

Aid agencies said cooperating with the Greeks at detention centres would make them complicit with an “unfair and inhumane” practice.

Two aid agencies,

  • the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and
  • the Norwegian Refugee Council –

said on Wednesday they were following the UN refugee agency UNHCR and aid organisation Médicins Sans Frontières (MSF)

In the same day also, another NGO, OXFAM, has pulled out of Moria detention camp, saying that ‘Humanitarian aid should be delivered in a neutral environment where refugees have freedom of movement’.

Let’s hope the stance that’s being taken by most of the NGOs that operated in Moria will bring the EU to its senses and provide the refugees with the protection to which they’re entitled.

#GreekScientists’ Discovery #Breakthrough makes reprogramming of cancer cells to healthy possible

Cancer researchers dream of the day they can force tumor cells to morph back to the normal cells they once were. Now, researchers have discovered a way to potentially reprogram cancer cells back to normalcy.

mirna-cancer-cell-reprogramming1

The finding, published in Nature Cell Biology, represents “an unexpected new biology that provides the code, the software for turning off cancer,” says the study’s senior investigator, Panos Anastasiadis, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Cancer Biology on Mayo Clinic’s Florida campus.

That code was unraveled by the discovery that adhesion proteins — the glue that keeps cells together — interact with the microprocessor, a key player in the production of molecules called microRNAs (miRNAs). The miRNAs orchestrate whole cellular programs by simultaneously regulating expression of a group of genes. The investigators found that when normal cells come in contact with each other, a specific subset of miRNAs suppresses genes that promote cell growth. However, when adhesion is disrupted in cancer cells, these miRNAs are misregulated and cells grow out of control. The investigators showed, in laboratory experiments, that restoring the normal miRNA levels in cancer cells can reverse that aberrant cell growth.

“This is why I call you to judge me #Greeks…” @atsipras Party splits hours after he resigned for #Grelections

“This is why I call you to judge me #Greeks…”, @PrimeministerGR said, resigning for #Grelections

Lafazanis, Konstantopoulou, Varoufakis, Stratoulis, all of them anti-MoU among Tsipras’ Party, but not among the 25 Split SYRIZA signatures the two (popular at most, both) in the center

25 lawmakers announced their move in a letter to Parliament on Friday morning in Athens, hours after Alexis Tsipras resigned and called an early election to deal with a rebellion in Syriza over his signing Greece’s third bailout deal and accepting austerity measures demanded by creditors. Among the 25 former Greek MPs are not Zoe  Konstantopoulou, the President of the Greek Parliament, who has strongly opposed the Memorandum agreement of the Prime Minister nor is the Popular Yianis Varoufakis

The new group, which will be called Popular Unity and will be led by former energy minister Panagiotis Lafazanis, becomes the third largest group in the Greek Parliament.

That means it could potentially receive the mandate to try to form a new government, although, it is not a party that has gone through national elections’ round yet, which might not allow them to get the mandate at all, professors of Constitutional Law said to the Greek media today

Having been catapulted to power after years of oppositions to Greece’s bailouts — which come paired with austerity and structural reform packages — the remaining members of Syriza now find themselves tasked with implementing one, the businessinsider commented.

But, still, It still looks quite likely that Tsipras will be Prime Minister in two months,BI’s article assessed.

Syriza remains popular in comparison to the alternatives. After getting 27.8% of the vote in the January election, the centre-right New Democracy party now regularly polls below 20%.

It’s possible that Tsipras will have to form a new and different coalition, the BI article assumes, but seems that there will be no alternative bloc in parliament to build a majority around. It’s not clear for the moment, how much support Popular Unity might sap from Syriza.

Alien signals, really? Mystery of strange radio bursts from space, could be ET…..!

STRANGE RADIO SIGNALS FROM SPACE . IS THIS ET?

That might sound far out, but a leading scientist in the search for extraterrestrial

intelligence (SETI) says we shouldn’t rule out that possibility.

“These fast radio bursts could conceivably be ‘wake up calls’ from other societies, trying to prompt a response from any intelligent life that’s outfitted with radio technology,” Dr. Seth Shostak, senior astronomer and director of the Center for SETI Research who was not involved in the study, told The Huffington Post in an email. “On the other hand, they could also be perfectly natural, astrophysical phenomena.”

Furious answer to the German Defence Minister by the Greek DM “Greece remains committed to NATO, despite close ties with Russia”

Obviously displeased answered Athens to the German Denfense Minister’s provocative comments

It was a sharp response of the Greek Defense minister Panos Kammenos to his German counterpart’s comment  of “Greeece jeopardizing its position in NATO by approaching Russian interests.”

“Greece has always been on the side of the Allies when they fought back German occupation armies … The behavior and statements of German politicians, which seem to wish to replace NATO and EU officials, are not only disallowed but approach blackmail”, was Panos Kammenos comment

Kammenos also blamed German DM Ursula von der Leyen for trying to “undermine European institutions, part of German aims to break apart the EU and NATO”.

Though, he added, “Greece is unwilling to replace Germany in its privileged relations with Russia”.

On Wednesday, February 4th,Defence Minister Panos Kammenos told AFP that Greece’s new government remains committed to its NATO role despite close ties with Russia that have worried its allies.

Speaking after his first meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and on the eve of a gathering of the alliance’s defence ministers, Kammenos played down concerns that Athens could go soft on Russia over the crisis in Ukraine.

“We spoke a lot about relations between the alliance and Greece; I assured them that relations will continue as before,” Kammenos said in an interview at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

“We will continue our cooperation on a political level and also on a military level.”

A NATO official said Stoltenberg had “thanked Greece for its continued commitment to the Alliance.”

“He stressed that Greece has contributed substantially to NATO for over six decades and said he counts on the steadfast commitment of Greece to NATO.”

                                        new3706-820x418
Kammenos played down any fears for Greece’ s commitment to NATO saying that  “We have seen these reports concerning Greece’s and NATO bonds, in recent days all around the world, but Greece will continue to be a member of Europe and NATO, that’s for sure.”

On the same moment , he made clear that Greece would maintain its ties with Russia too.

“Of course Greece has political relations with Russia. These relations are not hidden, these are open relations and we will continue to have those relations,” he said.

“The majority of Greek agricultural production is exported to Russia and now with the sanctions that has really affected farmers,” he said.

“Also we have (Russian) military equipment, we discussed that with the secretary general. We will continue to source spare parts so that we are able to keep this equipment, which will remain within NATO.” the Greek Minister of Defence added.

Hope smashes Fear in Greece, Tsipras wins the Greeks’ Heart. The Greek Xperiment reaching the peak by the science of Fear

                sAMARAS THREATENING
Alexis won the Greeks in the Heart. After five years of martyric tolerance on humiliation of the most Strict and Apathetic governmets that brought everybody’s mind, and day, to the bottom line, they said, undouptedly, NO to the Fear Factory that has kept them nerveless till now… Is it that Greeks have been tugged beyond their limits?
On the same moment, Apathetically at most, the ruling austerity government of Mr. Samaras, straight and clearly decided to invest in the Fear Attack to achieve to vote manipulation of the devastaded Greek mass, and unfolded an Unshamely Producted Presentation,
But  could this Political Science of decision-capture have won the results ?
And if yes, Is it Ethicaly correct as a Communication Act towards a nation ” in Crisis?
  • Could really, fear win this election?
A plane is flying. In the cabin, the passengers are reading
newspapers or playing with their smartphones. Suddenly they
hear a voice. “Good morning ladies and gentlemen, this is your pilot. I am glad to announce that this is my first flight! You are my first passengers!” They start looking at each other in apprehension and anxiety. “We are flying at 3.000 metres. No,no,at
3.000 feet” the pilot mutters. “Or is it… hands?”
  kstekloges20142_577313169
PASOK is not the only political party betting on fear to reap gains in today’s Greek elections on 25 January .
New Democracy, Primarily, intensively, and unstoppably, has been claiming  that SYRIZA will gamble with Greece’s future and points directly to the revival of a possible “Grexit” (a Greek exit from the eurozone) if SYRIZA’s leader, Alexis Tsipras becomes Prime Minister.

The Greek political system currently epitomizes the term ‘polarization’ a war of words and squabbling among politicians across the political spectrum and an enduring vicious circle of blame games that has plagued the country long before its first bailout in 2010.
In view of SY.RIZ.A’s 3-4% lead over New Democracy, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, is attackingTsipras on a daily basis, suggesting that he has a secret and
dangerous agenda which includes leaving the Eurozone and breaking ties with its lenders.
Samaras seemd to have no other choice,
  • Centre- right voters, his main target group, are angry that he failed on his promise to ‘negotiate’ a more balanced implementation on of the reform programme agreed withGreece’s lenders.
  • Furthermore, less privileged and middle class Greeks feel strangled by what they deem to be unequal and excessive taxation; which only serves to enable the Prime Minster to present primary surpluses to the Troika. In addition,a stubbornly high unemployment rate (one in four Greeks and one in two young people–is unemployed) has graduallyturned traditional New Democracy voters to other options: the extreme right parties (Independent Greeks and neo-nazi Golden Dawn) or directly to SY.RIZ.A.
However, efforts to portray the SYRIZA leader as an irresponsible gambler seem to be containing some of the damage. New Democracy’s poll ratings suggest it might retain the 29% of the vote it achieved in 2012.
But how much “scientific” could this mind control attacks have been, towards the fear- beaten public feeling in which  Greeks are condemned to live since austerity, and which has multiply escalated as an obvious communicational stratedy of Antonis Samaras  governing party to the very last moment of elections?
Absolutely yes,THERE’S IS A TRIED AND TESTED SCIENTIFIC APPROACH for gaining votes, as public research shows. Have a look on the “The Use of Fear Appeals in Political Advertisements, Analysis of the 2004 and 2008 Presidential Election”, School of Communication,American University Washington, D.C. According to the authors,
                                       30236
  •  Negativity used in an advertisement is a natural outgrowth of the emotional response of fear.
  •   “Theories of information processing indicate that the proportion of negativity yield influences spanning a range of judgments related to candidate construction and voting behavior, yielding effects that are different from the influence of sheer volume”

Therefore, it is crucial to understand the elements of negativity which Stevens states are proportion and volume.

With increased exposure to negative advertising, individuals are more likely to
learn about the candidates and to retain and gain information. Negative advertising not only provides a greater amount of information, but also has more clear-cut information about candidates.
Yet, it can often include character attacks (Stevens, 2007). These
character attacks are referred to as mudslinging. Stevens explains  that “while positive information is much a more powerful motivator of avoidance because individuals prioritize the avoidance of costs over the acquisition of gains” (Stevens, 2007, /p. 436).
In the case of the Greek people as a target, the point is, on this timing, WHICH AVOIDANCE OF COST DO GREEKS PRIORITIZE at this moment of austerity in their lives . fisrt.
Samaras’ government, let’s say, let the homeowners unprotected for the auctions of their first home,  while more  than 1/3 of households have become due the austerity seriously poor, and while he was swearing he would provide law protection for that issue, being for the Greek culture and psych, the most sacred cost.
Will the costs of Mr. Tsipras himself , as the negative ND campaig posistions him, be greater for the Greeks than loosing their homes?
_auctions
ND Candidates’ Negative campaign : they all keep repating the same thing: Fear for Tsipras
“When the proportion of negative information increases, so does the impact on
attitudes and behavor” (Stevens, 2007, p. 437), voting behavor in our case .
More specifically, negative messages should be more memorable than positive
ones .Thus, the resulting research designs use the volume or number of
advertisements that an individual has seen to assess the advertisements’ probable impact: greater psychological impact is assumed to result from multiple exposures to ads. This results in the repetition of both the information and the image.
Thus, these advertisements should “cause affect for the opponent to decline; they should, at the very least, not greatly deflate affect for the sponsor; they should have a net positive effect on evaluations of the sponsor relative to those of the opponent;
and, most important, they should increase the probability of voting for the sponsor rather than the opponent” (Lau et. al, 1999, p. 857). Lau and his colleagues also concluded that these Lau and his colleagues also concluded that these advertisements are more memorable

To the point: European Elite’s well established Fear
the EU elite’s long-standing warning against alleged threats from so-called “anti-Europeans,” by which they mostly mean Eurosceptics. At stake here is not just the (imagined) national communities or states of Europe, but the (imagined) European community and state, as embodied by the EU, says the opendemocracy. net
This politics of fear follows the same mechanism as those described above: opponents are essentialized and homogenized, while an apocalyptic future is presented (which, of course, can only be prevented if the policies of the elite are followed). Eurosceptics are “anti-European populists” “nationalist,” or even “anti-democratic,” while the future is one of political crisis or even war.

Norman Atlantic tragedy: Unknown still the unaccounted. Do we know how many are missing?

ANEK FERRYSURVIVER

Who was Who on that Ferry? Who are those still missing from each country? Whose “flesh” is still burning on that floating hell after almost two weeks, and who is going to honestly inform the public for the macabre marine casualty?

Italian prosecutor Giuseppe Volpe, who is in Italy investigating the tragedy, said 98 people were unaccounted for after the disaster.
He said: “There are 98 people of whom there is still no news.”

Who are those people? Why nobody is talking for them?

In Greece , the story is by the media systematically played down, as the press is being intensively absorbed by the pre-election polarity .The stories of the survivors as they came alive from the elusive tragedy are being played down, and the latest days, the ferry story may not even appar on the news, fading out in the Greek public opinion .

But we are talking of an uncountable number of  human bodies, potentially still flamming in that ship, next to us :  Greeks, international travelers, and may be immigrants. Both Greek and Italian authorities expressed their “fear” that there might be numbers of immigrants that might be found which have illegaly boarded on the ship.  It is a routine situation on the Aegean , -and now as is broadly revealed,  and the Ionian ferries-, to have illicit immigrants on board.

On Saturday Jan. 4rth,  one week after the disaster, Brindisi Port Capt. Mario Valente said that temperatures were “very high” inside the deck. Smoke still poured from the wreck. There was no estimate of when the search might begin.

It remains unknown When we could know anything more precise, for the world, the families of the unknown number of unaccounted passengers, for the international travel, for Greece, Italy, and the Mediterranean. This is the update of the facts revealed and officialy announced after the disaster.

Tragedy Topic nr.1, the victims:Who was who, and how many?

Greece and Italy have issued widely different figures for how many people are still not accounted for in the ferry fire that killed at least 11 people in the Adriatic Sea.

  • The numbers ranged from as many as 98, according to Italian prosecutor Giuseppe Volpe,
  • to 18, according to the Greek Merchant Marine Ministry.

Concerning the marine typical obligation ,“It is up to the departure port to match up their list and the people (rescued).  “That is why we are continuing our (search) effort: we cannot know what the exact number was, Maurizio Lupi told to the media.

  • Greece says Italy’s list is full of duplications and misspellings but the discrepancy could not be immediately explained since the prosecutor’s office was closed for the New Year holiday. But after the New Year holiday , the question is miraculously forgotten .
  • Italian transport minister Maurizio Lupi said it was unclear whether the passenger list released by the Greek authorities was an accurate reflection of who was on board. He said the ferry had made a stopover on a Greek island before it ran into trouble on Sunday morning. “There is an embarkation list on which the names of the 427 passengers and 56 crew appear,” Mr Lupi said.
  •  The Italian prosecutor stated that the official number of missing persons could be disclosed when Greece decides to give us a reliable passenger list because’ Greece on these procedures has been particularly slow,” he added.

According to the Greek Coast Guard, there is no information for 19 people so far since the early days of the disaster, of whom 10 are Greeks, a number that is announced and diffused to the Greek press , but is 19 people and no (98!) ,five times minor than the 98 people which the Italian authorities announced.

Dozens of survivors are not included in the list of passengers. The official announcement of the Greek authorities stated that “there are reservations about the exact number of survivors we can notice. A reason which may contribute to the overall confusion, is the possibility that some tickets might have been given just by manuscripts after the ship departed, by the account department on board…. “

Tragedy Topic Nr. 2, Safety : Safety Control had reported Fire errors and Emergency Rescue Response Plan absence.

Apart from leaks and doupts for the Safety qualifications of this trip before it started, which appear, after the fatality, to be scaring scandalous also, the first moments of boarding on that ship -before departure -were not showing any signs of maritime Safety control, as was easily by the passengers noticed .

B6BTffwIEAAh3yj fire doors norman atlantic ship the-sadly-prophetic-facebook-complaint.w_l

The absence of an endorsed plan for the Cooperation of the ferry with the Greek Coastguard in case of accident, had been reported and notified to all the Greek Authorities in charge: the Ministry of Marine, the Headquarters of the Coast Guard and the Greek Coast Guard, and to the the Coast Operation Center. The paper of formal notification had been sent eight days before the ship was caught in flames on that fatal journey. The Central Patras Port Authority after concluding for the Safety Control Report, had set a deadline of 15 days to the Captain of the ship as it is now said , to fix the deficiencies .

The deadline expired on Friday, January 2, five full days after the naval tragedy. The existence of the document was revealed on the first day of the accident on Real Radio, and was also presented by Realnews newspaper on Sunday Jan.10.

“Following an inspection E / C / B Norman Atlantic, flag Italy, it has been found that the ship holds no Cooperation plan for Search and Rescue situations (SAR Co-operation Plan) endorsed by your service” .
The cooperation plan for emergency cases is considered essential for Emergency cases when the ship has to cooperate with the Greek Unified Coordination Centre for Search and Rescue. In the case of Norman Atlantic, it was the ultimate lfataliy factor .

On a press conference given by Greek Authorities, the absence of the endorsed cooperation project was reported by the leadership of the Coast Guard as the main cause of loss of valuable time, and consequently, of lives.

“The captain of endangered ship Norman Atlantic is of Italian nationality. Understanding the command of the Unified Coordination Centre for Search and Rescue in the English language was not always effective, having serious delays in the execution and implementation “, declared Rear Admiral of the Coast Guard, Nicholas Patrinos.

But the absence of the cooperation plan was not the only error. The fire doors were not working!

It is such an international ship line. One of the most frequent Greece-Italy ferry trips from Patras to Ancona, one that links the two countries since decades, daily.

Whose responsibility was, finally to let , or not to let the ferry leave the Patras Port?

Norman Atlantic, he said , should never have left for this trip… As the night was getting darker, more dark was covering the hours of agony for the 300 passengers that were still trapped on this nightmare. Greek public and the media holds their breath praying for all the endangered lives

The tragedy took place on early Sunday morning hours, when Norman Atlantic was caught in flames . The fire didn’t really stop burning till now, although it has been set under control, claim spokesmen of the Greek authorities that inform the media in Greece.

Santas do run around Greece, up the mountains and down the sea , but is there any gift…?

Thousands dressed as Santa Claus, flooded Chania streets on Saturday December 27, participating in the 4th Annual Santa Run. Regardless of the cold and damp weather PARTICIPATION WAS HUGE, enough to make the traditional Chania port  …red, as well as the streets and every single corner of the traditional Cretan town . The run, that was held for charity in Chania, the second largest city on the island of Crete, takes place every year during the Christmas period.

santa 473775_10151232533933962_1248636714_o santa run 1 sANTA cHANIA But also, another  Santas event was organized on Crete, this time up on the mountains, where twenty fans of canyoning descended a beautiful canyon on the island. The event was organized by the Cretan Canyoning Association. The descent of the association took place in the canyon of Eligas,  by the 20 Santa Claus dressed members of CCA, of men and women.

The Cretan Canyoning Association started operations ten years ago, with the purpose of mainly educating young people to the standards of French and Italian canyoning schools and also the preservation and repair of secure locks, the exploration, the security and the mapping of new canyons in Crete. and al laround Greece .

A couple of weekends before Christmas, Athens was “miraclously” dressed in Red, the morning after a night when the city had turned to a battle- field, by the  hundreds of Santas marathon runners.

Like  a miracle picture in the eyes of the Greeks, the visitors, and anyone who happened to find himself in Athens during the 6-7 of December weekend, Santas ran through the city with festive cheer Sunday morning, a few hours after the same city, in the same streets had become a war field as protestors torched the downtown with Molotov cocktails. In the morning it was all clean and ready for the first ever Athens Santa Run, and smiling, the  600 “Santa Clauses” gave the street a festive feel again. More on our earlier story .
